- Difficulty breathing
- Ingestion of a toxic substance or foreign object
- Broken bones
- Cuts, lacerations, or puncture wounds
- Vomiting or diarrhea lasting longer than 24 hours
- Bleeding (internally or externally)

If you notice any of these signs, seek professional assistance right away. It is always best to err on the side of caution when it comes to your pet’s health.
What to Do in a Pet Emergency
When a pet emergency arises, it is important to stay as calm as possible so that you can act quickly and efficiently. We always recommend calling ahead when an emergency occurs. This allows us to evaluate the situation, provide first aid instructions over the phone, and prepare the hospital and our team for your pet’s arrival. However, should the nature of your pet’s emergency be too urgent for a phone call, please do not hesitate to come directly to our clinic for immediate attention.
If your pet’s emergency occurs outside of our extensive office hours, please reach out to one of the following emergency veterinary services:
- Vet on Wheels: 416-284-4610
- Veterinary Emergency Clinic (South): 416-920-2002
- Located at 920 Yonge Street, Suite 117
Please keep in mind that emergency fees will apply at these facilities.
Be Prepared for Emergencies
Pet emergencies can happen at any time, so it’s important to be as prepared as possible. We recommend keeping a well-stocked pet first aid kit at home, and familiarizing yourself with basic animal first aid procedures. Having your veterinarian’s contact information and the numbers of local emergency clinics readily available can also save valuable time in a moment of crisis. Additionally, understanding what substances and household items are toxic to pets can help prevent potential poisoning incidents.
