SPRING AND SUMMER TIME MEANS… HEARTWORM SEASON

Heartworm is transmitted when a mosquito draws blood from a dog or cat infected with heartworm. It takes with it a number of small immature worms called microfilariae and later, when the mosquito bites a new victim, the disease-causing larvae are injected, and that dog or cat becomes infected.

Common signs of heartworm infection can include fatigue, chronic coughing, vomiting, weight loss and damage to the heart, lungs and liver. The obstruction of blood flow resulting from this infestation can cause sudden death. However, with proper monitoring, blood work and heartworm preventive medications, you can avoid this problem and keep your friend safe and in good health.
